1924 菓子自動販売機「正チャンとリス」 (Confectionery vending machine 'Seichan and Squirrel') by 遠藤嘉一 (Kaichi Endo) & 江崎グリコ (Ezaki Glico)

While we know that similar vending machines were made by 遠藤嘉一 (Kaichi Endo), the only source I have that says this one was as well is a blog entry (archive).  If you find any more information, I would like to know. This is based off the comic series 正チャンの冒険.

This original machine is on display at グリコ 江崎記念館 (Glico Ezaki Memorial Museum).  There is at least one more surviving copy.  We know it is different because the metal on the head is caved in slightly:

江崎グリコが菓子店店頭で栄養菜子グリコの販売に使用した自動販売機です。日本の菓子自動販売機では最初のものと言われています。描かれている「正ちゃんとリス」は当時の人気漫画で箱全体が看板の役割をしていてよく目立ち、話題を集めました。内部にゼンマイ仕掛けの機械を設置しお金を入れるとチリンチリンと音がして栄養菓子グリコが出てくる構造になっています。

This is a vending machine used by Ezaki Glico to sell Nutrient Nako Glico at its confectionery stores. It is said to be the first confectionery vending machine in Japan. The illustration of ``Sho-chan and the Squirrel'' was a popular manga at the time, and the entire box served as a signboard, making it very noticeable and attracting a lot of attention. There is a clockwork mechanism inside, and when you put money in it, it makes a clicking sound and the nutritional sweets Glico comes out.

At the museum it is displayed next to 1931 映画付きグリコ自動販売機 [再現] (Glico vending machine with movie [reproduction]) [at グリコ 江崎記念館] by 江崎グリコ (Ezaki Glico).

This sweets vending machine equipped with a projector and a turntable!  This would have been one of the fanciest machines of 1931.  I do not know if one has survived, but a reproduction exists at グリコ 江崎記念館 (Glico Ezaki Memorial Museum).  This would have been one of the fanciest coin machines of its era.  I have not found a note about who made the machine, but since it was made for Ezaki Glico we are listing their company name.

At the 2:15 mark in this video we get to see the machine operate, and look inside.

the reproduction does not operate like the original.  This appears to be an LCD screen.

Even though it is not operational, I appreciate that the show what the mechanisms were, including the projector box, phonograph, and belt mechanisms to coordinate the devices with the candy vending mechanism.

Candy dispensed!  In the video we also see change fall out.  Real change mechanisms came far after 1931.
